Taking Time Off Isn’t Always Easy!

Everyone needs a break.

As we celebrate a holiday weekend here in the US, it’s a great time to relax and take some time off.

For those of us who are fortunate enough to love what we do, it can be a bit of a struggle to turn the old brain off and just relax. However, it is often necessary so we can avoid burnout.

HuffPost Business says, “According to a new study published in the Journal of Management, there is a significant difference between being engaged at work and being addicted to it. While the former is characterized by hard work because the worker is passionate about the job, the latter is often motivated by negative feelings like guilt and compulsion.” (Source: http://bit.ly/2XqpVYc )

After all, what’s the point of being our own boss if we’re still in the self-imposed shackles of our business?

Scheduling time off in our calendar can make the difference between saying, “I’ve gotta take some time off” and actually doing it!

  1. Thanks Genevieve for sharing the difference between workaholism and being passionate about what we do. I am a reformed workaholic and how I changed that behavior was: I studied mindfulness and began to meditate daily. I spend regular time in nature. Instead of filling up my calendar with things to do I’ve created space in my calendar. I regularly connect and spend time with people I love. I do yoga three times a week. I listen to my body and when it’s tired I give it rest.

    Another thing about workaholism, as with any addiction, it happens usually when we are trying to avoid dealing with something (e.g. a primary relationship). We work all the time so it numbs us out and doesn’t leave time for us to think and deal with the person or situation.

    1. I can totally relate Pamela. So glad you have discovered the addictive behavior of workaholism. Seems like you are much better off now.
      It is a delicate balance in the beginning, which I’m still learning about. Fortunately I’m getting there with meditation as well, and doing more things I love like listening to music and enjoying nature (though it’s too hot this week).

  2. Thankfully, once I retired, I came to appreciate the concept of time off and not becoming addicted to my work. Now that I am back working part-time, I know when I’m being lured into working more than I’m supposed to, or bringing my work home with me, and I know enough to pull back before I get sucked in and burned out.

    1. I love that you are working on your business part-time since you retired Barb. Seems like you have a great balance going!
      My husband loves retirement, but he often still pushes himself too hard since we have teenagers. Right now he’s napping though, which I’m really happy about! He could use the rest.

Yes … I’ve recognized the pattern I created early on leading to becoming a workaholic to prove to everyone I was good enough, worthy enough, smart enough and above all NOT LAZY like my abusive ex used to say. I find myself easily tapped in that mode but better equipped to take time off and schedule regular self care time

  4. I’ve made my Sundays a non-negotiable day off and often include Saturday too, Genevieve. After all one of my grudge points in the last 2 years of my corporate world life was the lack of weekends to spend with my family. It makes a big difference.

      1. Yes, I wonder if it is to prove to everyone that we’re good enough when we do that! I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. For me, it’s also a bizarre feeling that the wheels will fall off the bus if I don’t spend “enough” time on my business.
        I’m learning to let go a bit, and sometimes it’s easier than others.

  5. Oh, love that quote from HuffPost Business. Definitely gives me something to think about. In recent years I’ve become very deliberate about taking time for myself during the day, and on weekends. However, “compulsion” at times can be strong!
